Michelle Malkin is an Idiot
Wordpress technical help needed.

By Mary    ·     July 18th, 2006 at 10:35 pm

A couple of issues:

1) Embedding YouTube video. I cut and paste the embed code into the editor. I hit update (or save). Wordpress editor truncates the embed code. Video doesn’t show up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

2) The link button on the WYSIWYG editor. I highlight the text to be linked, click on the little link icon to add the URL. Mozilla experiences a fatal crash.

I can get around the 2nd issue by manually coding the link in the plain HTML editor, but it’s a pain in the neck. I’ve found no way around the YouTube issue.

I’m running XP and using plain old Mozilla (not Firefox). I could find no solutions in the Wordpress documentation. Any advice would be MUCH appreciated. Leave suggestions in comments or email me at info(at)michellemalkinisanidiot.com.

Thanks in advance :-)

  1. I couldn’t get YouTube videos to embed using the WYSIWYG editor, but cutting and pasting the link into the plain text editor worked fine. I’m not sure there’s any way around this using the WYSIWYG editor, but hopefully there will be.

  2. I only use the HTML editor (because the WYSIWYG is too buggy for me to bother; then again, I’m an old HTML hand), but there are a few solutions that may help.

For the YouTube embedding, it’s most likely the editor. Other possible culprits include having the WP option “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” checked under Manage - Write in the Site Admin (that’s caused more than a few problems with, for example, blockquotes within blockquotes, so it could be truncating the object or embed tags from YouTube). There’s a lesser chance that it’s your particular theme or style sheet. Unlikely, but possible.

If you can, I highly recommend avoiding the WYSIWYG editor; it’s processor intensive, bloaty, and one of those newfangled contraptions they added with 2.0 that I don’t think add much to WP functionality (see also, the fade script and some of the AJAX portions).

If you must use the WYSIWYG editor, another possible solution for the link issue is to use the keyboard shortcuts (Alt + A is the shortcut for links, alt + b for strong (bold), alt + i for emphasis (italics), etc.). I believe the shortcuts work even in the WYSIWYG editor and may be a way to avoid whichever particular script call that is crashing Mozilla (theoretically, the shortcut should crash the browser as well, but the error could be somewhere in the button code. Worth a shot, anyway).

I guess the last check is to make sure you’re running the most recent versions of both WP (2.0.3) and Mozilla (1.7.13).

After that, I suggest chickens and a drum circle.

  3. Oh yes, forgot to add:

I’ve no problems with using object/embed tags with the plain HTML editor (though YouTube and object/embed tags seemed to foul up bloglines for a bit. Just a point to pay attention to if you do start embedding the vids)

and, more importantly, WP has a nice support forum, where this question was raised(I didn’t read the thread until after I responded above. Oops)… and someone posted their solution using the WYSIWYG editor.

Actually, my eyes glazed over while looking at all the work the solution required to get the embedding with the WYSIWYG… and then I went back to my notepad++-and-IE 2.0-and-animated gifs-non-WYSIWYG happy land. But at least you know it can be done.

  4. […] *Update 2*  Wordpress still won’t let me embed, but I uploaded the video to YouTube. Here’s the link: Snowflake Baby Flips off Bush […]

  5. Check your e-mail, I’ve sent you instructions on how I fixed my embed problem with YouTube in Wordpress.
