Michelle Malkin is an Idiot
Who’s trying to silence whom?

Update: Ezra Klein challenges Michelle Malkin to a one-on-one honest debate on the S-Chip program. She chickens out and declines, of course.

Coward.

Michelle Malkin’s lead story today was “Democrat poster-child abuse, the nutroots’ pushback, and the continued campaign to silence the Right“.

That’s right. Michelle Malkin is pushing the mantra that there is some grand conspiracy to “silence” the folks on her side of the aisle. This claim comes after the rightwing blogosphere’s disgusting, coordinated campaign to stalk and smear Graeme Frost- a brain damaged 12 year old boy- and his family.

Think Progress explains the Frost family’s crime:

Two weeks ago, the Democratic radio address was delivered by a 12-year old Maryland boy named Graeme Frost. Graeme told his story of being involved in a severe car accident three years ago, and having received access to medical care because of the Children’s Health Insurance Program. He said:

If it weren’t for CHIP, I might not be here today. … We got the help we needed because we had health insurance for us through the CHIP program. But there are millions of kids out there who don’t have CHIP, and they wouldn’t get the care that my sister and I did if they got hurt. … I just hope the President will listen to my story and help other kids to be as lucky as me.

Since Graeme’s radio address, the fine folks on the right side of the blogosphere have declared this little boy “fair game”. They have hounded, stalked and harassed the Frost family. They’ve published personal information including where the Frost family live, work, and where their children attend school. Michelle Malkin herself traveled to Baltimore and snooped around the Frost’s property.

All this because a little boy and his family dared to speak out publicly on an issue which hits tragically close to home for them.

The message from the right is loud and clear: it doesn’t matter who you are, if you disagree with Michelle Malkin and her ilk, they will come after you. It doesn’t matter to them if you’re a grieving mom, a 9/11 widow, a Parkinson’s victim, a wounded veteran or a brain damaged 12 year old boy. If you dare to speak out in disagreement with the wingnuts, you are “fair game”. Expect your name to be dragged through the mud. Expect your phone numbers and email addresses to be made public, along with your date of birth, drivers license and registration information, physical description, and even birth information about your child[ren]. Expect all manner of wingnuts to come snooping around your property. Expect to be smeared relentlessly. Expect death threats from Michelle Malkin’s torch-bearing mob.

And the more personal experience, knowledge or so-called “moral authority” you have on a particular issue, the harder they will try to smear and intimidate you into silence.

But up is down and black is white in Michelle Malkin’s world. The coordinated stalking and intimidation of Graeme Frost’s family is just Malkin’s idea of “reporting”, you see. She and the Freepers and the rightwing radio hosts and other assorted wingnuts are merely “filling the vacuum” left by the evil mainstream media. And when the left blogosphere dares to call out the right on their disgusting, thuggish intimidation campaign against a brain damaged 12-year-old and his family, they are trying to “silence” the right. Yeah.

John Cole sums it up nicely:

I simply can not believe this is what the Republican party has become. I just can’t. It just makes me sick to think all those years of supporting this party, and this is what it has become. Even if you don’t like the S-Chip expansion, it is hard to deny what Republicans are- a bunch of bitter, nasty, petty, snarling, sneering, vicious thugs, peering through people’s windows so they can make fun of their misfortune.

And as usual, Digby nails it:

As John Cole pointed out yesterday, the Frosts should be the Republican dream family. Mr Frost is a blue collar entrepreneur; Mrs Frost is a part time worker with four young children, two of whom have serious health problems. They live in a house they’ve fixed up themselves which is their only real asset aside from an “investment” that has gained $500 in value in ten years. (Like many Americans, I doubt these people have Roth IRA’s and 401K plans and stock portfolios, don’t you?) Despite the nosy uninformed discussion of their kitchen counter tops, these people are not living high off the hog. They have virtually no disposable income. They are just average, working Americans trying to do their best.

Apparently, that’s not enough. Malkin and her husband are lucky enough to qualify for wingnut welfare and have healthy children. Bully for them. They got theirs and are now railing against the “choices” made by two working parents who make 45,000 a year. But I think she and her stalker squad are going to be surprised to find that most people don’t see things their way — this smug judgmentalism and rank callousness is not the American way. That’s not what freedom is all about.

More from the Baltimore Sun:

But while the Frosts were helping a bipartisan majority in Congress sell a plan to expand the program, they were not prepared for comments such as this one, posted over the weekend on the conservative Web site Redstate:

“If federal funds were required [they] could die for all I care. Let the parents get second jobs, let their state foot the bill or let them seek help from private charities. … I would hire a team of PIs and find out exactly how much their parents made and where they spent every nickel. Then I’d do everything possible to destroy their lives with that info.”

[…]

“Hang ’em. Publically,” the contributor wrote. “Let ’em twist in the wind and be eaten by ravens. Then maybe the bunch of socialist patsies will think twice.”

They. Have. No. Shame.

  1. There’s no low she won’t stoop to in order to drown government in a bathtub like rightie hero Grover Norquist wants to do. She doesn’t care that Blackwater just got another 92 million dollar contract from the Pentagon as long as there are no “socialist” programs stateside
